Kayaking at Cowan Lake
Tuesday
Most years we try and get up to Cowan Lake during July or August to go kayaking among the lotus beds, which are to be found in some of the shallow inlets of the lake. We left straight after breakfast to try and beat some of the heat. It was a perfectly still day, and the lake was still as a mill pond. On the way to the lotus beds, we pass a couple of trees where there are usually a number of cormorants hanging out, and today was no exception. Since we were there last year, they have cut a couple of channels through the beds, which makes it easier to access. There were masses of red-winged blackbirds about, but difficult to photograph from a moving kayak! It was really quiet at the park - We saw 2 or 3 fishermen, and then two other couples kayaking. Because of the lack of wind, it wasn’t a good day for sailing. We stayed out for about an hour and a half in total, by which time it was heating up, and it was good to get back in the car’s air conditioning. I stayed in during the afternoon, getting a few jobs done. It’s only 9 pm, but I already feel I’ll be ready for bed soon!
