NZ KINGFISHER ( Halcyon sancta)
The weather was great today to get out and about with the Kingfishers. They consume a lot of Crabs at this time of the year which is evident from this pic.with the legs etc underneath the branch ( as I also pictured three days ago-thankyou) I've heard people say that they have never seen a kingfisher but fencelines, powerlines and Driftwood in estuaries and mudflats they are aplenty.- especially at this time of year as they get up lots energy for the mating season ahead-They nest in holes in cliffs or holes in trees They dig the holes by flying at the clay with their beaks 4-5 eggs are laid each clutch. This one (shown) is a youngster as its plumage is more torquoise than the adult.
