St Lawrence, West Wycombe

We went to the garden centre today for emergency flower pot and (peat free) compost supplies.  We last visited the day before lockdown and loaded up on vegetable seeds which are now providing us with a good flow of vegetables!

Just down the road from the garden centre is St Lawrence's Church, West Wycombe (extra 1, and currently closed).  The hill belongs to the National Trust and is popular with walkers.  The church was rebuilt by the Dashwoods from West Wycombe House (also not reopening this summer) in the 1750s.  The Hell Fire Caves (closed apparently indefinitely) are in the hillside below.

The churchyard is full of charming gravestones, a few of which I have included in the blip.  The Dashwoods themselves are buried in the rather spooky mausoleum (extra 2 and never open) next to the church.

West Wycombe has a chamber music festival every September, arranged by violist and former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Lawrence Power, whose family live in the village.  He is still hoping that the festival can go ahead in some form, and so are we.
