We went to Melrose Abbey today. I was fascinated by all the gargoyles and other decorations on the outer walls. I did things back to front. I bought a guide, but did not read it thoroughly until we were back in the car. I only discovered then that there was a sculpture of a bagpipe playing pig on one of the outer walls, which I had missed.

King Robert the Bruce was buried in Dunfermline Abbet in 1329, but his heart was interred in Melrose Abbey in 1331, following its return from Spain, allegedly on the site of this plaque which states ' A NOBLE HART MAY HAVE NANE EASE. GIE FREEDOM FAILYE'. apparently Bruce instructed a friend to carry his heart on crusade, and when his friend died,Bruce's heart was returned to Melrose as per his wishes.

A casket containing a heart was found on this site, but there is no evidence that it was Bruce's.

The figure on the right of the picture looks as tho he's thinking 'Oh my God what will happen when I die. I want to keep my heart, and my head!'
