The ‘penny’ bridge

A walk along the River Severn towards the boathouse. This bridge is one of the main routes into town and indeed when we had major floods earlier in the year, it was the only way cars could get in to Shrewsbury.
It is called the ‘penny’ bridge because there is a toll to pay to cross it. It was once a penny, now it is 20p.
The barrier used to be manned, years ago, by a lady who had been a trapeze artist in a circus, or so the story goes. Once a week, she could be seen dragging her shopping trolley, with all the cash in it, to the bank, where it was deposited.
