Stag Beetle

We started digging around and turning over the soil around where the cherry tree stump was ground out and this little chap was the first of three Stag Beetle larvae we accidentally uncovered!  We tucked them all back in to a safer spot with some rotting wood and hopefully all will be fine.

Our afternoon plans were scuppered when I took a tumble on our walk so we returned and while I rested Statix went back to the garden and one of the local blackbirds came up next to him for several minutes looking for insects, oh how he would have loved the larvae for lunch!!
