Memory

I was gardening today trying to tame a Clematis Montana . They tend to go mad after they have flowered. It is at the front of the house, next to the garage. Over the garage are two large trees, a hazel and an oak. There were frequent bangs as hazel nuts and acorns fell on the roof. At first they made me jump, but I got used to them.
It reminded me of when we first moved to Kenya in 1972. Shell put us In a temporary house. It was on the edge of the forest and we were quite nervous, having heard all sorts of stories of violent robberies, most untrue of course. We were safe, after all, we had a guard on the gate and security bars on the windows. However, we hadn’t been there very long when In the middle of one night there was an almighty crash somewhere near the kitchen, followed by several more. We were pretty scared until we discovered that there was a huge avocado tree hanging over the corrugated iron roof of the kitchen and the heavy ripe fruit were crashing down. Such a treat, but in 1972 we had never eaten an avocado! We soon got used to them!
