Derelict nuclear bunker
This afternoon we came across a derelict concrete structure at the top of a remote hillside above Callander.( see extra photo)
It turned out to be one of the 1,500 underground monitoring posts across the UK incase of a nuclear war.
A passing walker told us he remembers as a boy climbing down the steel ladder into the small room at the bottom.
In the event of a nuclear war though these structures would have been little more than underground coffins because there was no air filtering system.
There is a strong whiff of Dads Army about the whole enterprise, aimed at showing the Russians, at the height of the Cold War that we meant business.
We had set off to walk to Bracklin Falls only it was so crowded we decided to give it a miss and walked instead up the mountain.
We are glad we did. It revealed a stunning range of mountains to the north including Ben Vorlich and Stuc a’ Chroin, and we stumbled across a piece of history.
