Weald of Kent Steam Road Run

The Weald Of Kent Road Run was great fun today as an ode to the big event Weald of Kent Steam Rally which usually takes place this weekend every year. The steam rally is one of so many cancelled events this year due to the pandemic and the organiser organised the road run in tribute.

Today’s run was attended by a few steam engines, military vehicles and classic cars, volunteers, commentator and photographers and raised money for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.

We gathered at various pubs along a 5 mile, 20 mile and 37 mile route around Ashford for socially distanced catch ups in the fresh air. There was no official start or finish point to avoid gatherings and it was the only way the council would approve the event.

Midway through the road run my friend’s engine got a bit thirsty so parked up by a water hydrant near Asda. One of the crew captured the moment and it gave shopping for essentials new meaning!

So nice to catch up with fellow steam enthusiasts and to enjoy the sunshine. Today we saw steam engines, a steam truck, Willis jeeps, Jaguar D-type replica, two Bugatti’s, two penny farthings, three tractors and a motorbike. There were a few beers too!

Looking forward to the steam rally recommencing better than ever in August 2021.
