Quien sabe donde...

... who knows where?

A severe blow to the reputation of King Juan Carlos I of Spain who has left the country to distance himself from the current king while suspicions rise over his alleged money laundering and bribery in recent years.

The blip on my computer screen is from 2010 when the Kings of Spain attended the funeral in Barcelona of Juan Antonio Samaranch, the former head of the International Olympic Committee - see link below.  I saw all of them a few times during the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games when I worked as the assistant head of the Olympic Village carpool.

Hispanophile British historian, Paul Preston, recently defended the king's political legacy but did not hold back from criticizing the current world-wide political scene. It's refreshing to see such frankness!

“Whatever one says, one shouldn’t forget the historical legacy,” he said. “As far as things are concerned now – and this is true in a way of all the democracies – with the rise of populism, we’re seeing a dreadful loss of faith in the political elite for the obvious reason that they’re a lot of lying, incompetent bastards … The odd thing is why the disillusion doesn’t go further than it does.”

We wait to see if the monarchy will survive in Spain. Its reputation has never been as high as the British equivalent and it is going to be challenged, no doubt.
