What was the concept behind the show [the Jewish Museum exhibit in 1971]?
I was trying to state everything about life - both its cynicisms and its compassion. I wasn't interested in whether they came out of that saying: " Isn't Smith a great photographer." I didn't give a damn. I wanted them to come out emotionally stunned and moved so that they would think, and think in a good way. It was huge and obviously there were too many pictures for everybody to see.
