Italianate
We decided to go and visit Portmeirion today and to carry on home afterwards because the weather was being decidedly Welsh, which is similar to Cumbrian.
Our beautiful view for miles over the coast towards Porthmadog had disappeared under a thick blanket of low cloud and we could barely see the hedge a few feet away.
Portmeirion village was designed and built by the architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975, because he loved Italian mediterranean colour and design. Frankly we were scratching our heads as to why, because it all looks a bit incongruous among the slatey greys and greens of a misty Welsh coast.
Still each to his own. I mean I love those things too but I'm not sure about recreating it in this country.
It was used for various films and tv productions notably The Prisoner in the sixties, which I don't remember seeing but it became a bit of a cult.
It has lovely gardens and a few cafes and shops where of course you had to follow the usual restrictions currently in force. A lovely day.
