An early plea on social media channels that two cygnets were being attacked by two adults at a point on the canal. Mrs A S and I turned out and were quickly joined by one of the CRT banksmen (Phil) and the reporties.
It became apparent that initially two cygnets from the top sections had ventured into the territory of the next down stream pair, they had been driven back to the boundary but had been unable to make it up the bank to pass the closed lock gates. Driven off by the reporties the adults were looking to move in for the kill! While we were occupied with the adults one cygnet got round the lock on foot. The other if you look closely is tucked against the wall by the by-wash wall. Some two hrs later we had coaxed/ driven him/her in to the lock run it full of water and with passers byes aid opened the top gates ( no been operated in years) squeeze him/her through to join it sibling and hopefully swim up to reunite with parents and the other siblings.
Todays events may explain the disappearance of the three cygnets at the turn of the month!?
