Fort
Today we went back to try to find Down Craig fort. We approached from a different direction and got there very easily. After a bit of searching around and fighting through undergrowth we found the ditch and rampart in among the trees in this blip. The ditch was very marked, and probably about 1.5m in depth. Some of the stonework of the rampart could be seen.
Down Craig is a promontory fort so the ditch and rampart have been built across the neck of the promontory, enclosing the high ground of the promontory which overlooks the sea towards the mainland. The steep ground around the rest of the promontory forms good natural defences. The site of the fort is completely overgrown with trees so it's not visible from a distance and it is very difficult to photograph the remains of the bank and ditch. However the trees in this photo mark the site of the fort, which is probably Iron Age in date. All in all an interesting visit.
