The Artichoke
A Stepney boozer, famous for hosting the Kray twins and their gang, lies derelict and awaiting redevelopment with yet another boring block of apartments which will be unaffordable to the locals. At the moment the building seems to be occupied as an informal concession into flats. Squatters perhaps. And the Saab on the forecourt has seen better days.
On the corner of Stepney Way and Sidney Street it is close to the site of the Siege of Sidney Street and the original pub was a watering hole for the anarchist activist who was involved in the face off with the police.
This morning all was quiet with nobody around.
My entry for derelict Sunday. Now sitting under a sun umbrella in the garden as the heat builds up.
