Met office lied to us
It was due to be 28 degrees and we had decided we were going to the beach. Had a long debate about where to go, should we go north Devon or south - where would be least busy etc. Eventually we decided on north Devon because the beaches are so long and huge the chances of social distancing were much better. With it due to be so hot we were nervous about being turned away and left by 9 to drive the hour and a quarter up there. On the way we noticed it looked quite grey. Drizzle started to speckle the windscreen, and the car thermometer said 18 degrees. We checked the forecast and it had totally changed - no sun due till 4pm. Meanwhile, the forecast back in Exeter was for 27 degrees... north Devon now seemed to be the only part of the south not experiencing a heatwave
We went in the sea and tried to muscle it out, but not one of us had even brought a jumper and were freezing (see yesterday’s blip for the optimistic choice of clothing). The queue for cups of tea was twice round the car park so that wasn’t an option either.
Eventually though the promised sun came about 2.30 just when we were about to cut our losses and drive back. We then had a glorious afternoon as it warmed up. We did loads of body boarding and finally got our longed for cup of tea once the queue died down. Sadly though I didn’t take a camera down to the beach for fear of rain so all I have is this shot off someone else’s camera. Having walked miles from the car park I couldn’t quite be bothered to go and get it for a blip.
