Fa'side Castle
Near Tranent, East Lothian. A castle has stood on the site since around 1189. In 1547 the building was set alight by the English army before the battle of Pinkie Cleugh, reputedly killing everyone inside. The oldest surviving parts of the present castle date from late 1500s. It has associations with Robert The Bruce and Mary Queen Of Scots. Ownership has changed hands many times through the centuries and by the 19th century the castle was in ruins. Fortunately it survived threat of total demolition in the 1970s and was restored in the 1980s. Now it is category B listed. At present the castle is on the market for offers over £1,700,000. The current owner was convicted of embezzling tens of thousands of pounds from the charity he managed and as a result has to sell up.
