National Libraries Day

Seeing as today is National Libraries Day, heres a blip of a commemorative plaque I spotted in Tarves while out on a leisurely bike ride, it markes the Library Room - The Gift of Andrew Carnegie to the people of Tarves 1892.

"Andrew Carnegie's philanthropic career began around 1870. He is best known for his gifts of free public library buildings. His first such gift was to his native Dunfermline in 1881, and it was followed by similar gifts to 2,509 communities in the English-speaking world."

Today, libraries are under threat from many sides as cash strapped councils seek to privatise, close or sell off library buildings to developers.

Libraries are more important than ever as as they give everyone open access to knowledge and knowledge is power.
