Another step was made today towards Rafi having his tracheostomy removed. He tried using a speaking valve on his tube which has a valve on it which allows air in, but not out, so he has to breathe out through his mouth and nose. It also means that air will be passing over his vocal cords so if he wanted to make noises he could. Only a little noise was heard today, we are not expecting speech for some time yet as Rafi is unable to move his mouth much. Rafi tolerated the valve well and was not distressed. He had it on for a full hour, and we will be able to increase this a little tomorrow.
The neurologist has promised to bake a cake when Rafi has his tracheostomy removed, he'd better start pre-heating the oven soon!
