Wee Cumbrae Island

Only a mile from the mainland yet quite remote

Idyllic location, Wee Cumbrae, where the Firth of Clyde ends and the open sea begins.

The original lighthouse was built on the highest point on the Island. It was coal fired and required three cartloads of coal to be pulled up the hill daily. The light was soon abandoned as in winter low cloud often obscured the light resulting in frequent shipwrecks. A replacement lighthouse was built close to shore on the south west corner of the islands
