Life in Newburgh on Ythan

How the other tiny fraction lived.

Fyvie Castle, a magnificent fortress in the heart of Aberdeenshire, is a breathtaking vision of towers and turrets with a history stretching back 800 years.
Out in the extensive grounds the grandeur continues, with a large and picturesque loch and an unusual glass-roofed racquets court and bowling alley. The court was built in 1903 by  Alexander Forbes Leith the west of the castle. According to those who know about such things, the court was built  in a "vigorous crenellated and bartizaned neo-Baronial style". It was harled and equipped with finely carved inset heraldic panels in Italian marble and sandstone. On the south gable there is a carved Italian marble fountain basin inset in a blind gothic window. The photograph shows the basin.
