Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Tranquility

In 1300, York had around forty-five parish churches. Twenty of them survive, of which twelve are currently used for worship.

This little gem is Holy Trinity, Goodramgate. Founded in the first half of the 12th century, its architecture is that of the 13th and 14th centuries, with woodwork and pews of the 17th and 18th centuries, and stained glass from 1470. It is about as close as you can get to how a church would have looked after the Reformation: dark and lit by candles, quiet, homely, with uneven floors, high box pews and plain walls.

The church is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust having been declared redundant on 29 June 1971.
