Window on past times

This is the main detail from the Longman Memorial Window at our church, St Mary's in Braughing, which celebrates its 100th anniversary tomorrow. It depicts, among lots of local landmarks,  the images of three gallant soldiers from various stages in history. From left: Godfrey de Bouillon, a medieval knight who joined the first crusade in 1096; St George, who served as an officer in the Roman army, protested against the torture of Christians and was executed in AD303 for his beliefs; and Charles Gordon, who saw action in the Crimean war, in China and Africa, and was murdered during a revolt in Khartoum in 1885.
It was presented to the church by Mr and Mrs Charles James Longman, of local Upp Hall, in memory of their second son Frederick who was killed in action in northern France 1914 - the first Braughing resident to be killed in the war.
