An unknown newcomer

I spotted this small bird prospecting for food in our garden. I'm not sure it can easily feed from either of the two feeders, but perhaps like the robins in the last couple of years it will learn new techniques.

I'm assuming it is a juvenile but I don't readily recognise it. If it had a chunkier beak I'd think it was a finch. Any ideas out there?
