Red Kite, Harrow Hill

A Red Kite (Milvus milvus) soars above the old Chalk Pit on the side of Harrow Hill, close to Lee Farm in a fold of the South Downs at the north end of Angmering Parish.

Red Kites are still relatively rare birds here in Sussex - particularly when compared to areas such as the Chilterns - though (despite the map on the RSPB page linked to earlier!) they can certainly be seen all year round here.

Today's 'Extra' - taken earlier on our walk this afternoon - shows another quite rare bird - a Raven (Corvus corax) - making its distinctive gutteral 'croak' in flight near an isolated Oak tree in a remote area of the Downs between Angmering, Amberley.and Storrington in West Sussex
