An extraordinary achievement of evolution.
There are 550 species in the genus worldwide. This one is almost certainly Passiflora caerulea, an evergreen climber which can be grown in milder, sheltered areas. The flowers last for one day.
The name refers to the passion of Jesus in Christian Theology. In the 15th. and 16th. Centuries Spanish Christian missionaries adopted the unique physical structure of the plant, especially the flower parts, as symbols of the last days of Jesus.
