HMS Iolaire

This demure shed was once part of a Royal Naval Reserve base at Stornoway. It was used in the early hours and days of 1919 to accommodate the remains of sailors, washed ashore after the sinking of HMY Iolaire just after midnight on 1 January 1919. About 205 died; 140 washed up on the shores around Stornoway, but the bodies of about 60 were never recovered.
