Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery
Another visible part of Bristol's alternative culture scene is its art museums. According to Gombrich, the "riddle of style" boiled down to the question: "Why is it that different ages and different nations have represented the visible world in such different ways?[" Art historians, he said, had done their work by merely describing these changes. The Arnolfini demonstrates Bristol's alternative art scene because it appeals to a small, diverse selection of people. Bristol City Art Museum has paintings by Impressionists, demonstrating mainstream "high" culture. However, one of its most famous exhibitions was an installation by anonymous Bristol-bred street artist Banksy, who represents "alternative" culture.
