Kettles Hill Fort
A bright, sunny day, so we downed tools early and went for an afternoon walk to Wooler Common in search of red squirrels. After all the gloomy cold weather we've had recently, it would have been a crime to stay indoors!
In an attempt to avoid any Bank Holiday crowds, we headed up past Kettles Hill Fort on a short stretch of St Cuthbert's Way, and through the woods. One red squirrel spotted high up in the trees towards the top of the track, but far too distant for photos. We walked up to the top of the hill on an old mountain-bike track, very overgrown in parts so probably not used as such in quite a while, before going down to the path around the ponds. Lots of cars in the car park and so many people on the path that there was no chance of seeing any squirrels around the feeders, so we walked down to Wooler along the road.
