Braemar Games and Aussie humour
Sadly, the Braemar Games, which would have been held this coming Saturday, have been cancelled because of Covid-19. 31 years ago today we attended the 1989 Braemar Games. I can remember it as clearly as if it had been yesterday. We were totally immersed in tartan and bagpipes and sometimes impenetrable Scottish accents. We loved it all. We thought we were probably the only Australians in the audience.
That day gave us one of our most often repeated stories. The stands were full of excited spectators, many dressed in their clan's colours. Some went the whole hog, so to speak, and dressed in their clan's full regalia. One of these gentleman was sitting a few seats along from us and his headdress bore two large feathers. As the events started we heard from a few rows behind us a woman say, in an unmistakably Australian accent, "Anybody got a pair of scissors?" Clearly the feathers were obstructing her view. We recognised the humour instantly and worked hard not to make a show of ourselves laughing too much.
We never did identify the owner of the voice but we know where she came from.
The extra is the Queen Mum arriving at the Games.
