Long-tailed Duck
This drake was in Echna Loch and has probably just arrived in Orkney from breeding-grounds in the far north. Quite an early date for that to happen. I was looking for a Wilson's Phalarope reported there but no luck, not helped by forgetting to pack my binoculars. D'oh! The WP is an American bird named after Alexander Wilson, a Scot from Paisley, like me! It looks like the US is starting to rename birds with such names, however, as it is revealed that some of those so acknowledged were unsavoury characters. I don't know about our Alec, but maybe he'll get the same treatment.
