Nicky and her Nikon

Walk in the woods

The woods are still beautifully green and fresh looking at the moment, so I thought I would photograph them before the colours of autumn start to appear. It was a cloudy morning but we did have moments of sunshine. I see deer every day on my walk now, there seem to be more around at the moment or maybe they are just more active.

I went grocery shopping - I am planning on making tuna niçoise for supper so I bought some tuna steaks. I find we seldom eat red meat these days and this will be a tasty and healthy supper.

I must share the book I am reading at the moment and wonder if anyone else has read it - Apeirogon by Colum McCann. A bit challenging, as it is written in a very unusual style and it takes a little while to get into it. It could be one of the most beautiful books I have ever read, despite being a drawn out tale of tangential facts. The book tells the true story of two grieving fathers, one a Palestinian, one an Israeli, whose lives are connected as they both have lost daughters in the conflict. It is an unusual mix of fact and fiction with interesting nuggets of information about birds, world events and famous people. It has a very unusual format of 1001 fragmentary chapters — a reference to “The Thousand and One Arabian Nights”, some only a few words long, some a few sentences long. The chapters are numbered from 1 to 500, then back from 500 to 1, with the middle chapter being actual source material. So far I cannot stop thinking about the excellent observations and unusual, complex structure of this book. Not for those who like as easy read, as it is not a simple linear story, but it could well be considered a masterpiece as it is so powerfully written and so evocative. Longlisted for the Booker Prize 2020.
