Planting Trees: An act of rebellion
This morning the local branch of Extinction Rebellion's environmental people undertook a guerrilla tree plant.
The trees were a gift from another environmental group and were delivered to our garden the day before lockdown. They've sat here in pots all spring and summer. Today it was judged safe for the trees to be planted with everyone wearing masks of course.
The location is where the Council HQ used to be. It was a particularly ugly 1960s building and was demolished some six or seven years ago. Since then the land has regenerated to the extent that there is a good few acres of wildflower meadow just minding its own business.
The local authority still owns the land and has passed plans for it to be developed for new houses and, controversially, a distributor road. It's not easy to follow the logic for this road and there was a lot of opposition to it at the planning stages. In order to construct it some mighty trees will be sacrificed, and there will be an increase in traffic through an already busy part of town.
Covid restrictions have put a stop to the road and house building; the wildflowers and trees have had another season. Maybe in the post Covid world (whenever, whatever that will be) there will be a rethink. I really hope so.
I can't think of a more peaceful protest than tree planting. Later today there will be a press release and twitter activity. My blip is an attempt to publicise the action.
