Edensor Graveyard

Visit to Edensor today (pronounced Enza). Whilst all the tourists are merrily tripping around the grounds of Chatsworth we've come to see a hidden secret.

In the village across the road sits the church of St. Peter's witness to some remarkable royal events. The tiny church it's self is stunning and I get a tingle down my spine when I enter. Here you will find buried six of the previous Duke's of Devonshire along with Joseph Paxton architect of Crystal Palace. A wreath of everlasting flowers sent by Queen Victoria hangs on the wall and one can only imagine the royal funerals that have been held here in the past with the Queen, Queen Mother and Prince Charles etc in attendance.

There is no-one here, it is silent and the snow adds to the atmosphere. Across the road from the church overlooking her husband's grave now lives the Dowager Duchess in The Old Vicarage. Deborah Devonshire's husband the 11th Duke lies here. Alongside him is this grave for Kathleen Cavendish (nee Kennedy) sister of JFK. It was on this spot that JF Kennedy stood when he came to visit his sisters grave in 1963 shortly before he was assasinated on his return to the USA.
