in a country churchyard
I had a yearning to visit an old church. Two miles away, in Buxted, is St Margaret the Queen, named after the wife of Malcolm, King of Scotland after Macbeth. The church was built in the 13th century and is little altered. Christopher Wordsworth, brother of the poet, was a minister here and is buried in the churchyard. The Yew Tree in this photo is famous, being over 2000 years old. A sign attached to its trunk proclaims that 'this tree predates the birth of Christ'. Fields and trees surround the church - in an echo of the Highland Clearances, the village of Buxted was moved a couple of miles down the road by the Earl of Liverpool, who fancied a larger deer park.
With reference to yesterday's blip - the inside of a 13th century church has a wonderful musty smell.
I have put my photos of the inside of the church on my blipfolio.
