Rear View

The rear view of buildings can be revealing. The best example I know is the Royal Crescent, Bath. At the front, you see a wonderful, harmoniously designed, curved terrace of houses which is world-famous. But walk along the road behind the Royal Crescent, and you can see that the 18th century builders were left to their own devices at the back.

This is a rear view of some of Llandaff's buildings. Llandaff is a village with a cathedral, a city in its own right, with some well-designed and imposing frontages. But round the back it's different, an unfamiliar jumble of shapes and styles which also shows the density of building that's happened over many years. A long-time Llandaff resident who's seen this shot can't place it all!
