Naked Ladies

Today's the day …………………….. to get landed with

If I'm perfectly honest, there's no way I would ever have gone out and bought these to plant in the garden.  They always look very sinister, eerily pushing their way through the soil at this time of the year - and very deserving of their common name of Naked Ladies

I got very excited when we came here at first and they produced their big important-looking leaves in the spring.  I had no idea what they were at this point but I felt sure that they would go on to produce interesting flowers.  But of course, they don't produce anything until the autumn.  The leaves just go yellow and slimy - and take ages to die off.  Then, just when you've completely forgotten they were there, the above appear - looking like giant crocuses - but with something just not quite right.

Apparently, its leaves, corms and seeds are all poisonous.  So one way or another, I'm thinking that its days are numbered in this garden at any rate ……………………..
