Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Two brothers

Two more scanned faces from Mrs T's old family photographs. Mrs T's father Wilson is on the left and his brother Gilbert on the right.

When World War 2 broke out Wilson joined the Royal Navy and spent the war mine sweeping around the British coast. He survived the war.

Gilbert was a baker by trade and this being a reserved occupation he was forbidden to join the armed forces. He didn't survive the war.

In 1940 Gilbert was baking in his home town of Fraserburgh in NE Scotland. On November 5th a German bomber attacked the town and one of the bombs landed on the Commercial Bar where a darts competition was being held. The bomb killed 34 people and injured 52. Gilbert was one of the dead.
