Today we welcomed the new MSc students - but only virtually. As Academic Selector it was my role to hand them over metaphorically to the Programme Director, so I was the first to address them. And it was so much more difficult to do so when all you're doing is looking at a screen full of initials, rather than a class full of people. So, the persona I put on when public speaking didn't come.

After visiting a kitchen supplier with A in the afternoon, I bought a new car battery, thereby restarting two overdue domestic projects. Then I went into Edinburgh to see Mum and a colleague I've not seen face-to-face since March. It was good to get out of the virtual bubble that I've been living in for most of the past few months.

Driving between my vists, I stopped off to capture this familiar scene, where the sun was lighting the buildings where I've worked for 30 years, but not set foot in since March.
