Keeping an eye on you
Late blip today after a walk turned into a drive to A&E. In the 3 years we've lived here we've had 3 trips to A&E with MrsW now beating me 2 visits to 1 as the casualty.
We decided to go up to Gedney Drove on the Wash to make the most of the gorgeous weather. The coast and sea defences are owned by the Environment Agency and have some great walks if you like big spaces and open skies. We were a bit surprised to find cows grazing when we got there but as it is a designated public path decided that they must be friendly. Generally they were very docile and not inclined to even move due to the heat of the day.
Until we got about 100 yards along our walk when a young bullock comes charging up the embankment towards us. Caught by surprise we had no option but to stand our ground but it wasn't going to back off. It ran straight up to MrsW and butted her, sending her over on to her back, and then proceeded to stand over her in a very threatening manner. This would have been worrying in any circumstance but MrsW has osteoporosis so just the fall could have broken a bone or two let alone if it were to stamp on her.
I tried all the usual tricks of spreading my arms and shouting loudly but it wasn't bothered in the slightest, continuing to butt at MrsW's leg and paw at the earth next to her. In the end I tried to lure it down the embankment on the side we had come up from, which was steeper than the rise it had run up. Luckily this seemed to confuse it and it eventually turned tail and trotted off. MrsW was very shaken but appeared to have no broken bones. We headed back taking the unofficial route between a barbed wire fence and the drainage ditch which was arduous but felt somewhat safer.
As we got within 50 yards of the gate I saw a couple starting to open it and tried to call out to them. Too late. It was a kissing gate with a narrow entrance which was fortunate as the lady had gone through first when a bullock (presumably the same one) charged up to the gate and blocked her in. The husband couldn't open the gate at first as he had to push it towards her but eventually managed to extricate her with the bullock still butting at the gate post.
They decided to drive off elsewhere for a walk. Well you would wouldn't you?
As MrsW turned to make for the car she caught her ankle and went over. She thought she had heard a crack so was loathe to put any weight on her leg but after giving it a try decided it probably wasn't broken. However once back at the car her ankle was so painful and swollen that A&E was the only way to go.
So there we were at the end of the afternoon at reception for A&E. "So how did this happen?" asked the nurse. "Do you want the long answer or the short one?" I said.
MrsW is home and resting and dosed up with painkillers. No broken bones but a probable torn ligament.
I think I might call the Environment Agency in the morning.
