OSPREY

Common Osprey (Pandion haliaetus); this pair set up house keeping on a nesting platform attached to the top of one of the light poles on our school's football field. Originally, they had built a tremendous nest of twigs directly on top of the lights. Those lights get very hot and the threat of a fire was certainly there. So...in the winter, the Electric company came by with one of their cherry picker buckets, dismantled the nest among the lights and attached this platform on top of the pole in hopes the birds would nest again the next season. They did...and no danger of fire. This strategy is used commonly by the local Electric company to discourage birds from nesting directly on power poles.
