Bright Buttons

The young buzzards have been making a terrible racket today, their mewing sounding more like that of gulls. I got pics but I've posted one fairly recently.

We didn't go out so I decided to post a macro image of the silk button spangle galls that I spotted on an oak sapling recently. It might be false memory syndrome but I'm sure I've seen old fashioned buttons made by winding silk around a circular template. I love how the 'silk' of these 'buttons' catches the light. I photographed them on our rusty old skip together with an acorn and crab apple. The flat gall is a spangle gall made by the same wasp but by the bisexual generation. The silk buttons are produced by the all female agamic generation.
