Cows or Horses - A Guide for Food Manufacturers

There is some major confusion at present about how to tell horses and cows apart. There are however many differences between cattle and horses as this simple guide will show.

For a start cattle are heavier, broader and have a thicker neck. Usually the cows head is wider, broader and heavier than a horses head. Cows have ears on the side of the head, not on top and the real give away is the "Mooo!" sound they make.

Horses of course have no horns which is a big clue if you really can't tell the difference plus of course they can nip and bite if they feel like it. They also have the clever and somewhat surprising ability to lay their ears back flat against their heads which cows simply cannot do.

If you poke a horse it will generally give out a "Neigh!" sound which in my opinion is the real clincher if you are really just not too sure about which species you are looking at.
