Yes Dear
In search of Torquay's history - Fawlty Towers
John Cleese was inspired to write Fawlty Towers when he and the rest of the Monty Python team were staying at the Gleneagles Hotel, Torquay and filming Monty Python's Flying Circus in the early 1970s. The hotelier at that time was a man of "infinite rudeness", called Donald Sinclair.Fawlty Towers was never actually filmed in or even near Torquay.
The location of the building used for the outside shots was the Wooburn Grange Country Club in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire. After a mysterious fire in 1991, developers quickly turned the site into 8 homes
The NEW GLENEAGLES bares little if no resemblance to the hotel that inspired the series. You will still find pockets of memorabilia relating to its fame, and periodic Fawlty Towers weekends are staged, but for the most part, this part of the hotels colorful life has been put to bed. However,I am sure I saw the Major pacing up and down waiting for the newspapers.
