Epiacum

Otherwise known as Whitley Castle it's only 15 miles up the road towards Alston. Tom was particularly interested in it as it features in a series of books he's been reading by Bernard Cornwall, The Last Kingdom.
It's situated on a hill above a small farm shop and cafe. Three quarters of the fort is surrounded by a series of earth walls to acts as a defence. The Romans were protecting silver mines. You can't see any stone word like you can at Housesteads or Chesters but it was interesting to see the banks of earth in lines. The photo was taken with my iPhone on the pano setting from the corner of the fort. I don't think it does it justice, perhaps the extra is better.
