Crane fly
Crane fly
Today I counted 6 of these creatures, some dismembered by spiders and three attached to one conservatory window. This is one, taken from the inside with the green lawn as the background.
This lawn has numerous brown patches all over it.
Reading up on crane flies (Tipulidae, in general) I see that the larval stage, known as leather jackets, cause these brown patches by eating the grass roots.
Now you probably know all this, but did you know....?
In 1935, Lord's Cricket Ground in London was among venues affected by leatherjackets. Several thousand were collected by ground staff and burned, because they caused bald patches on the pitch and the pitch took unaccustomed spin for much of the season. (Wikipedia)
As if the touring bowlers needed help from the leather jackets!
PS South Africa toured that year and won at Lord's by 157 runs.
