Greensett Moss
The weather is set to change later this week so we took the opportunity of the forecast fine day to head out early to Ribblehead to complete the third of the Three Peaks by walking up Whernside. Sadly, gone are the days when we could complete the Three Peaks Challenge and do all three in one day (24 miles, 1585m of ascent). The last time we walked it was to mark colleague Andy's leaving from School to promotion in another school. Several of us walked the full route, with other friends and their families joining us for the individual peaks (or meeting us at the Pub!) It was a great day, but a very tired long haul back to Horton from Ingleborough at the end of the day!
Tony suggested we take the bridleway which goes underneath the viaduct and along the valley bottom till it reaches the track across to Ingleborough, at which point we turned right and began our ascent. We were on the top (and in the low cloud!) before lunchtime and we didn't hang about long as a stiff breeze was blowing and it was quite cold in the cloud. Good job too as when we began the descent we were suddenly faced with a long crocodile of folks heading upwards! It must have been very busy on the top later on!
With it's very long ridge, Whernside isn't the most picturesque or blippable hill so my blip is of the small unnamed lake on Greensett Moss, which is on a plateau below the summit ridge. The low cloud was just starting to clear at this point and the sun breaking through on to the water, but there was still an awesome cloudbank hanging over the valley.
No trains on the viaduct during this visit sadly.
