Locomotive #12a Kissack

Artist reviews in Isle of Man continued with Noah today, and included considering separate proposals for bronzes for Ramsey (figurative RNLI sculpture), and Peel (a basking Seal). The final pitch was from Julie, a glass artist proposing an artwork for Laxey, linked to the almost retired but still magical Mercury Arc Rectifier there - all as previously mentioned

We had an appointment afterwards to discuss this with the Director of Public Transport. Julie offered to give us a lift there, but Noah and I ended up having to push her car all down the high street until we finally got it going (am always impressed by any lady who knows how to jump-start a car!) We were late for our meeting, but at least it was a transport related excuse we gave. All went well and afterwards we got the reward of the Director's guided tour of the many steam trains still managed by the Manx Transport Department.

Here then is a shot of the ever-willing Noah posing in front of Steam Locomotive Kissack #13. We were both impressed with the contrast seen here of the domestic real fire and hearth sited in an industrial locomotive shed. Quite ironic given the steam trains and their fire boxes were all unlit whilst they were being maintained and winterised.

It seems that Kissack was made for the Manx Railway Company by the Beyer, Peacock Company in 1910 and was named after an old company director. It is painted in the 'fleet' livery of 'Indian Red'. Although numbered unlucky #13, it is often referred to as #12a by superstitious railway staff.

Postscript: Rushed back tonight all excited with the prospect of catching Real Madrid vs Man Utd on TV. Sadly it was not to be as it was only on Sky. Had to listen on the radio instead but what a result at the Bernabau - a 1:1 draw gives our boys a real chance at Old Trafford with the away goal.
