Ti Te Tutahi

This mural is in Newmarket. It references the geographic location of Newmarket within a triangle the sides of which connect Ohinerangi (Mount Hobson), Maunga whau (Mount Eden) and Pukekawa (Auckland Domain). These three old volcanic cones were each the site of an important Pa.

The lone Cabbage Tree symbolises the single Cabbage Tree which grew in Newmarket at the corner of Broadway and Mortimer Pass, until 1908. That tree was known by Maori as Ti Te Tutahi. The whole presents a homage to Newmarket's past, while hinting at progression into the future.

S' car needs more work to meet the Warrant of Fitness requirements and won't be ready until tomorrow. So I walked home rather than back to Newmarket to collect her car. The extra is a photo of the seemingly bare ground where once were big trees. Nothing is left.
