Inbound from Barra

Another good day today, tho’ the first frost of the season, I think. The mercury dropped to a tiny fraction under zero, enough to put a sheen of ice on the car windscreen. What’s going on? It’s only 25th September! Places inland of us have had several light frosts already.

I walked down to the town this morning for a meeting with Andy of BID4Oban, the small organisation which was set up to encourage businesses in the town. We’ve been cooking up a scheme to overhaul and improve the planting in and around McCaig’s Tower, Oban’s pseudo-Coliseum. I’ve come up with a proposal and costs and Andy will now take this to the council in the hope of finding funding – that’s his speciality! We’ll see. At the moment it’s a very boring space with a lot of  uninteresting and tightly clipped shrubs, trampled beds and worn-out grass. I’m hoping that we can turn it into a seaside garden full of wonderful plants!

On the way down Taylor’s Brae the walker gets a wonderful view down over the town and harbour. This is the MV Isle of Lewis, arriving in Oban from the Isle of Barra at 11.45am.

Limerick of the Day:

A psychopath sent to Siberia,
Made a friend of a purple wisteria.
They played Russian roulette,
With a goat from Tibet,
And nibbled the heads off bacteria!
